Comments from vagrant Comments from vagrant vagrant commented on The ±0 Electric Kettle From Japan Dear Brian, if the white plastic matches your kitchen decor, go for it, or even look at the Sunbeam line. While Japan has the rice cooker market locked down, you'll find plenty of Sunbeam, Procter-Silex electric kettles on the shelves in the U.S. at better prices. (Everything is cheaper in the U.S.) Talk a look at a Walmart, or Target and you'll find what you're looking for. (Personally, I use the hot water so often, I leave the cord plugged in, but it's nice that the slack is stored in the base unit.)

That's right kids. If you like coffee a la French Press, or green tea, you'll find that the electric kettle won't overheat your water like a gas kettle.

vagrant commented on TSA Says X-Rayable Laptop Bags are Go Yeah, at the border, customs agents have massive leeway. Hey kids, don't forget a customs form for your goods before you leave. [forms.cbp.gov] I've never been asked for mine, but I don't want to deal with the hassle of the electronic/camera items I travel with, when coming back to the U.S.

vagrant commented on AT&T 2008 Smartphone Roadmap Leaked @DoPeY5007: My understanding was the Xperia X1 was due to release in September. I figure we'll see it before year's end. I also presume AT&T would carry it. While the Touch Pro is nice, it's not quite the X1.

vagrant commented on TSA Says X-Rayable Laptop Bags are Go FAIL
People will put other stuff into the bags.
TSA agents will discern approved bags from others?
Expect a cluster when this happens and back to the old routine, we all know.

*As turboke pointed out...why drop another $100?

vagrant commented on How I Survived a Japanese Game Show: So Far, Lame But With a Touch of Gadget 1. Mochi is prepared in many different ways. As the big block, like discounteggroll noted and popped on a stick then grilled, or wrapped up with some nori and enjoyed with soy sauce. It's also offered in thinner portions with stuff inside, like sweetened bean paste, or other flavored/fruity stuff. You'll find the sweet stuff everywhere in Kyoto.
(Unfortunately, someone always dies each year choking on it. Usually old people and around New Years, when it's popular to eat.)

2. I like how the subtitles aren't really spot-on. Makes it more enjoyable and the clip looked funny to me. People doing silly stuff on TV knows no geographical boundaries.

I like silly shows like this. It's just mindless and enjoyable watching others suffer. (Why do you think the Coliseum was so popular for half a millennium?)

vagrant commented on Pop-Up Hotel Rooms Interesting and a great idea for use outside the urban area. Still, some logistics to consider like bed and room furnishings, cleaning of linens and the Uber-Generator to pump out the power for the lights, AC, hot water to clean people and linens/towels. Of course this setup is limited to water availability as well.

vagrant commented on EMobile's Japanese Ad Equates Obama with a Monkey to Sell Phones @shamoononon has a hebetudinous dog: Only yourself and Kazuo understand what the commercial was meant to lampoon, as you've seen, or know about the popular new TV show here "Change". That's about a young guy that got into politics.

Here's the link to the TV show previously posted. [wwwz.fujitv.co.jp]

It is sad to see how many people think the world revolves around them, or a particular country. Travel people and get a f00king clue. The world is nice and big and it's fun!

@Adam Frucchi - I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'm selling. Seriously, you should have asked someone. Don't tell me you believe everything you read/source.

vagrant commented on iPhone 3G to Sell Out in Japan Within Hours @antitrust311: is on the right track here. The phone will be popular and sell here. It is a popular phone, but of course not for everyone.

I've asked in previous posts if people commenting live here, so I'll ask instead, are you commenting on what you perceive Japan to be like based on what you've read, or watched on TV?

I use the HTC Kaiser here in Japan with Softbank. The girlfriend uses some phone with DoCoMo that allows her to have two numbers for personal and business use.

I don't know anyone here that has a 1SEG TV/phone combo, or uses their phone to buy things. Yes FeliCa is widely known, but for whatever reason, people still use Suica cards. Myself included. (Passmo...No thank you. Limited use.)

News Flash: Most people use their phones as just that, a phone.

@areoworks: Yes, iTunes is in Japanese and works fine. Works like a champ with my girlfriends iPod Touch on her Sony computer and both are in 'Japanese'. Swing by the Apple Store in Ginza and get an eye full if you visit. :)
(Her iPod touch works fine on my Macbook Pro too using iTunes in English!) With the iPod Touch, you can change the language to whatever floats your boat.

vagrant commented on A Quick Glimpse of Tokyo Toy Show 2008 Ughh...I was going to go tomorrow morning, oh crap it's 1:15AM here. Drinking in Roppongi has caught up to me. Anyways looks like fun. If I don't make it, I'll watch the entire video and pretend I did.

vagrant commented on Iron Man Blu-ray Preorder on Amazon I waited to leave the U.S. until after the movie was out. Watching it again on the PSP isn't quite the same. I need a bigger TV anyways. Should be fun when I return.

vagrant commented on PSP 4.0 Firmware Now Available Update worked for me. I guess it does save a couple clicks with that Google search option from the menu.

As for beating the game...well, for the fun time you get, it seems worth it to me. I burn through money faster on things...oh wait, better not go there.

Anyways, I purchased my PSP to watch 1SEG TV. The games/videos/Internet etc. were a bonus. I figured why spend $300 on a TV/Radio, when I can get a gaming platform and more.

vagrant commented on Sony PSP Firmware 4.00 Getting Google Search @xcharliemx: Current guess is for a July release.

As for games, Iron Man was reasonably fun, but I'm digging around for Logan's Shadow. (I'm new to PSP)

The ability to adjust the playback will be nice for video recorded using the 1SEG TV. (At least for the Sumo basho and the junk...err stuff the gf likes.)

As for Google, I guess it might save the extra click to get to my bookmarks.

As for the bees, my guess is the expanding concrete jungle.

vagrant commented on 'Tokyo Sky Tree' to be Second-Tallest Building in the World Mmmm...digital TV in more places, but with same sucky shows. :(
I think they "officially" broke ground last Saturday. There's a video out there on YouTube that shows the view from the elevation/location of where the tower will be. It pans around. Anyways, the skyline is going to look trippy once that thing is up.

vagrant commented I'm happy the current gf can operate a computer with out my help.

vagrant commented on Update: Japanese News Broadcast of Akihabara Killing Spree I stopped by last Saturday, as I needed to pick up a few things. There are still mourners at the location they designated for bereavements, which is right in front of the Softmap that's on the corner. There were definitely more police in the Akiba area.

One thing they did in response to the attack is cancel the closing of the main road "Chuo Dori" on Sunday. This allowed people to just walk across, or hang out in the street. I believe the proper word was "suspend", but it is for an indefinite period.

Ginza still has it's "Pedestrians' Paradise" on the weekends, where they close off the street to vehicles, but it seemed like there were a few more police about the area as well.

@obeygiant: Tethering is using your phone's data connection to gain Internet access. (Typically via a USB cable, or Bluetooth)

vagrant commented on Comcast Increasing Upload Caps By 2x/3x Tomorrow I noticed this increase in early May. (My usual cardboard home is under a Hwy 99 overpass in California, but I've relocated my blue tarp here in Japan for a while.)

Anyways, my Sling is pushing out that rate and it's great. I've been waiting for increased upload speed for some time. I have the "Gold Tier", which is the faster connection. While I don't get the theoretical 2Mbps upload throughput, it does usually average around 1.5Mbps and I'm happy about that. The picture really is better as one would expect and my old Slingbox Classic does the job beautifully.

As for the amount of bandwidth I use...well how much TV do you watch? Now multiply that by 1.5Mbps.

vagrant commented on First Snow Leopard Screenshots Look Exactly Like Leopard Funny, I don't remember paying for the updates I received after I installed Leopard.

I guess if I like Leopard, Tiger, or whatever I don't have to upgrade if I don't want to. I mean, when people purchased their Apple computers/devices, they got what they wanted right, if not I'm sure they returned it...right?

vagrant commented on Can AT&T's Network Handle Millions of Data-Hogging 3G iPhones? I will be discouraged if it has limited BT functionality. It is one hell of a convenience on my Tilt & N95 when pushing files.

vagrant commented on ONDA Urinal Concept Changes the Question: Did You Wash Yours Hands While Going to the Bathroom? While a similar toilet can be found in many homes here in Japan, a bit different styling is all, I've never seen it in any public location.

I think it would simply get clogged with cigarette butts, or as previously mentioned, LEVEL 2 BONUS ROUND.

Still, you can't use soap with it, so the gf and I never use it and use the sink to wash.

vagrant commented on Transportation Bill Gives $45 Million To Maglev Project, Sets It Up For Fail That's what we get with a bunch of old f00kers in congress riding the craZy train. Business as usual is everyone's fault. (yours and mine) Actually, my issue is their tenure, more than their age.

Here in Japan, they're just as dumb. Blaming the head office instead of all the culprits. In fact, England is having its own issues along the same lines.

Everyone is looking to point the finger and while perhaps true at times, unwilling to take their share of the blame.

vagrant commented on Google Maps For Mobile 2.2 Saves Gas With Bus and Train Directions This is great. I don't always like to drive to S.F., so I take the train and once there I use BART and the Muni Bus. (Tokens FTW!)

vagrant commented on Would You Unlock the 3G iPhone Even If It Has Good SDK Apps? I would unlock the phone because I travel to different countries. Thus, I will be using different SIM cards, as AT&T's Intl' roaming plans are costly. Skype further assists me with a number that clients can call and I simply forward it to whatever number I get from each carrier. (I do this now with the Tilt.)

I do understand that some may want the simple convenience of just using the same number and being able to receive text messages from friends/family, or they may not be wise enough in the first place to understand their options.

As for Jailbreak...I guess it depends on what additional applications will be available out of the box, or via an available download. I don't mind extending my contract though. AT&T works fine for me and I have a craZy amount of Rollover Minutes, since I'm out of the country more than I'm in.

vagrant commented on BBC to Broadcast Analog Channel Live on Internet Crap! That still only leaves me with BBC America. Still it's brought some old/new favorites over the years.

vagrant commented on Louvre Apple Store Now Official, Mona Lisa Keeps Smiling @Geisrud: Actually, I think it will work fine. It's an excellent location with all the other niche shops. Hell, I'd even do one better and sell an "Edition Speciale" iPod touch. Preloaded with various images of the artworks in the Louvre. Only available at that location.

You'll find me though across the street at the Musee d'Orsay checking out Camille Pissarro's stuff. (My favorite) Seriously though, the Louvre is awesome, but do yourself a favor and check out the Musee d'Orsay while your in the neighborhood.

Anyways, there's still so much I haven't seen at the Louvre. Need to head back one day...soon.

vagrant commented on Lightning Review: Polaroid PoGo Wireless Mobile Printer I first got wind of this about a year ago. I like it and as noted, it is a novelty, but what the heck. Still, I'd like the price point to be $100, so I'll wait for a sale, or something.
