Football - Real Kick iPhone Game Actually Plays Meatspace Soccer

Some app developer was smart enough to realize that the iPhone's speaker pushes air around, and thus, can be used to move a little styrofoam ball around a fake soccer field. More »

Tendril Vision Clock Helps You Save in Electricity Bills

I like the Tendril Vision's looks. And I like it even more because it's real, even while it feels like a spare part for the Enterprise's bridge. The clock connects to the electric grid, giving you real time consumption information. More »

Remember that whole student-laptop spying fiasco? Here's an update:

The kid took the computer home, but his family hadn't paid the necessary insurance fee. In my opinion, using the built-in camera this early in the case was probably a little extreme.

They saw the kid handling what appeared to be drugs. His parents said it was candy. Now they're suing the school.

Just curious: has anyone gotten to know someone on Giz, only to later find out they already know them in real life?

Extra points if you hated them on Giz/loved them in life or vice-versa.

@mattycakes: Two cases:

1) I had seen a funny animated .gif of two brothers my senior year in highschool ("Self taught" Calc class with 4 students; we spent most the time web-surfing). Turned out I was friends with one of them two years later in college, but didn't know it until his brother posted some photoshops of them by my third or fourth year in college.

2) Met and hung out with some people I met through an on-campus DC++ filesharing network. Play video games, make a mess in the cafeteria, throw the occasional party. Found out later that several of them were also friends with some of my old highschool friends, whom I had lost touch with, when we had a party and one of the bands they had play were several of my old highschool friends.

I also get a kick out of seeing member names I recognize across different forums (mydellmini, what.cd, SCC), but I change my username so I doubt anyone recognizes me.

The playlists disappeared off of my iPhone. Music is still there, and I'm sure when I go home and re-sync, the playlists will come back, but it's still annoying because there's only a 15% segment of my music collection that I actually want to listen to right now.

Why can't they move this stuff to the cloud so I could just re-sync over the interspace?

@tomsomething: Outstanding question. Back in the late nineties / early 2000's there were a few dot-com start-up companies trying to pull this off but the labels were none too excited about the concept. In an ideal world you would own a license to certain songs and have the rights to stream them from wherever to whatever you like, but they could never get permission to proceed. So, we are still on this half-ass (or full-ass, depending on your perspective) system where we "purchase" songs. There are devices that allow subscription services where you pay each month and have access to a library, but that isn't what you are asking for - and you are absolutely correct that the technology and systems should be available today to pull this off.

@Monty: The music would be tricky, but just having the playlist shouldn't be a problem. Just an xml or similar document that organizes the files you already have.

Then again, maybe it doesn't make since for them to ONLY make the playlist availble and not the music. After all, it would only be a fallback for when the playlist goes poof but the music is still there. meh.

@tomsomething: A me.com account only gives you 10GB of cloud space, unless you pay more. And you're already paying $100/yr for the 10gigs. Some people would need up to 32GB of cloud space. Then, the transfer would be limited to wi-fi. Transferring that much data over 3G would kill it.

@Monty: Isn't that what LaLa does? I think they charge $0.10 per song for unlimited streaming rights. I think it's a pretty neat concept.

And I think Apple just bought it, so we'll see what will come with that I guess.

@Monty: LaLa definitely needs to ability to know I own a song in iTunes and let me play it wherever I am through streaming.

@modestmouse: It definitely does have that ability I downloaded the LaLa importer program just to see if it worked, and it seems to. Never really tried it out, but it does show the vast majority of my music on my account online.

Without a LaLa app (which i really don't know how Apple will feel about it. On one hand, they own it, on the other, I'm supposed to be downloading music on iTunes...), I just don't really see the potential in it yet.

@modestmouse: Eventually, it has to go global, regardless of what company you obtain it through.

In the old days of all-physical media, the ownership rights were symbolically embedded in the thing itself. You have an ABBA tape, so everyone knows you own the right to listen to it. You have a hardcover copy of Catcher in the Rye, so you have the right to read the story.

When we download a song legally, a license needs to somehow be associated with our personal identity. Not our computer. Not our Apple ID. Ourselves.

But, you know, in a way that doesn't make privacy advocates nervous.
